The sunshine vitamin is commonly known as vitamin D. It’s also called so because the most common source to get this is to bask in the sunlight where it turns cholesterol into vitamin D. Inefficient production in skin or lacking in diet can cause issues like gastrointestinal disorders, renal diseases, and liver diseases amongst other things.

Persistent low levels can cause osteoporosis and lead to fractures. It can also lead to muscle weakness, cancer and in extreme cases, death. In kids it can lead to rickets where the bones become soft and bend. It helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus and helps in building strong bones. Aside from this it also supports a range of functions in your digestive, nervous, immune and circulatory systems. Having the ability to act as an immunity booster is what makes this vitamin an even more important component of our daily lives. A single cup serving of milk from a desi/A2 cow provides as much as 15% of the daily required serving. One of the best ways to get it is to drink a full glass of cold A2 milk and the versatility in the milk means you will be sneaking in additional beneficial elements into the body and it can be done in multiple creative ways throughout the day.

Why specifically the desi/A2 cow milk? Because the desi cow has a hump through which runs a special vein, the Surya Ketu Naadi, that helps it to absorb the energies of the sun and pass it into the milk as Vitamin D.

Vitamin D plays a key role in mood disorders like anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). By consuming foods rich in vitamin D — like A2 milk— people living with mood disorders may see a reduction in symptoms. So say goodbye to lack of vitamin D with a balanced meal, and healthy exposure to sunlight and uplift your mood!

On 19th June, 2021 in the midst of the night, with the active help of Bhandari Pokhari police a truck was caught in the Bhadrak district of Odisha. Smuggling 14 cattle in a small truck, when this was discovered the voiceless souls were found in a treacherous state. Stuffed, suffocated, starved and their mouths tied so that they couldn’t even make noise in their painful state. With the help of police and local volunteers, we were able to give these cows a better home at Maitipur Gaushala run and managed by our partner shelter-Dhyan Foundation, where they live freely with abundant fodder, care and safety.

On 19th May, 2021 with the help of local Bharagoda Police (Jharkhand) and alert animal lovers, a truck stuffed with 5 cows and 2 calves was stopped from being smuggled in atrocious conditions, being taken to their slaughter. They were saved because the police knew of an organization that never refuses to accept any number of cattle, even in the weakest of health. One of the babies was found dead, but no remorse was seen on these smugglers. The rest were stuffed so brutally that they had no space to breathe. Now they have found freedom, safety and love at our partner Gaushala run by Dhyan Foundation.

On 21st, MAY 2021, life changed for a soul. While the state was in lockdown, a man on his way home in the Durgapur Industrial area saw a calf lying on the roadside looking as sick as could’ve been. As he went closer to inspect, he found it lying down completely, a sign that the cow was ill or injured. Not seeing any physical marks and after looking around for a while he discovered that the being was abandoned and in pain. Being a part of Durgapur Society for Caring Paws and Claws, the man sprung into action and immediately contacted Dhyan Foundation, our partner Gaushala & NGO.

Speedy action and advice with the help of the local police station and community allowed the calf to be safely transported to the nearest Dhyan Foundation gaushala which stood ready with its team to receive the calf and treat it, in Asansol. As the calf reached the gaushala it was immediately taken in and treated with care and was brought back to full health.

Currently, the calf finds itself in a nurturing and safe environment, happy and well fed. As is the case with all rescued animals and cows taken care of by Dhyan Foundation with over 70,000 in number across the country.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English.

“To my mind, the only possible pet is a cow. Cows love you. They will be your friends forever.”- Bill Bryson.

Cow cuddling is an effective way to reduce the burdens and stresses of daily life. Her warmer body temperature and slower heartbeat gives people a calming experience while cuddling her and you can even give her a gentle and warm backrub while reclining against them. And as the cow gets friendly she might even lick you. Also, you can brush, pet, and chat with the animals and connect with nature, and your inner self.

Scientifically, cow cuddling triggers the ‘happy’ chemicals oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, subsequently lessening cortisol (the stress chemical), cutting down feelings of anxiety, tension and the manifestations of sorrow.

Know the benefits of cow cuddling

  • Increase in oxytocin (also known as love hormone) which makes a person happy and affectionate
  • Reduces stress and all the mental problems by calming our mind
  • Decreases palpitations and cures major problems such as spine and heart problems
  • Normalizes blood flow

Trend in western countries

People in the west are increasingly taking to embracing the cow for hours as a healing therapy for various illnesses and particularly anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not India, the original land of the holy cow, but Holland takes credit for a simple self-care practice called cow hugging! Koe Knuffelen is Dutch for cow hugging, a wellness trend that was started more than a decade ago. During the pandemic lockdown, cow hugging has apparently grown into a global health movement with the appeal of soothing frayed nerves and calming the body.

Embracing cows is catching up more in the West. In fact, it is no longer just a cute wellness trend. Experts have come to accept that it brings immense mental health benefits, the practice has growing global appeal.

In the West – from goat yoga to sound baths, wellness trends designed to soothe and calm both body and spirit have been in vogue. The cow is a gentle animal and the practice of “koe knuffelen” is centred on the inherent healing properties of a good human-to-animal snuggle. The farms that offer such services also take care to offer a structured programme.

The cow cuddlers arrive at the facility and familiarize themselves with the place and the cows. They interact and greet the cows and both warm up to the others presence. Then they rest, interact and cuddle with the cows, giving massages and enjoying their company. It becomes pretty therapeutic.

Cow cuddling – experts believe – helps release oxytocin in the blood and promotes positivity and reduces stress. Simply put, this is the hormone released in social bonding.

This healing activity is helping bring people closer to nature and country life. There are numerous advertisements on the Internet, advertising hug-a-cow activity. Some farms in Nashville, USA offer the same at the equivalent of a session. Farms in Rotterdam, Switzerland and even other places than the Nashville farm in the United States are offering cow-hugging sessions and promoting the activity’s joy-inducing, stress-busting properties.

It is not just the humans who benefit. The cuddling experience can even be pleasurable for the cattle themselves. According to a study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, after such sessions, cows show cues of deep relaxation reactions too.

Western countries are charging a huge amount on hourly basis for cow cuddling and Indians have this advantage to feel the therapy without paying anything which is a great opportunity for Indians to initiate a step towards a cow cuddling.

Visit any Feed A Cow partner shelter near you by booking a free session with us and soak in all the love.

“It was jolly in the country. A cow and little pigs to play with and milk warm from the cow.”-  Georg Brandes.

Buttermilk is a fermented dairy drink. Traditionally, it was the liquid left behind after churning butter out of cultured cream. It is also called chhachh (छाछ) in hindi.

Buttermilk packs a lot of nutrition into a small serving .One cup (245 ml) of cultured buttermilk provides the following nutrients

  • Calories: 98
  • Protein: 8 grams
  • Carbs: 12 grams
  • Fat: 3 grams
  • Fiber: 0 grams
  • Calcium: 22% of the Daily Value (DV)
  • Sodium: 16% of the DV
  • Riboflavin: 29% of the DV
  • Vitamin B12: 22% of the DV
  • Pantothenic acid: 13% of the DV

Buttermilk may offer several health benefits, including improved blood pressure and bone and oral health.

  • May be easier to digest than other dairy products

The lactic acid in buttermilk can make its lactose content easier to digest. Lactose is the natural sugar in dairy products. Many people are lactose intolerant, meaning that they don’t have the enzyme needed to break down this sugar. Approximately 65% of people worldwide develop some degree of lactose intolerance after infancy.

Some people with lactose intolerance can drink cultured dairy products with few to no side effects, as the lactose is broken down by the bacteria

  • May support strong bones

Buttermilk is a good source of calcium and phosphorus, as well as vitamin D if it has been fortified. Full-fat varieties are also rich in vitamin K2.

These nutrients are important for maintaining bone strength and preventing degenerative bone diseases like osteoporosis, but many people don’t get enough of them.

A 5-year study in people aged 13–99 observed that those with phosphorus intakes 2–3 times higher than the recommended dietary allowance of 700 mg per day increased their bone mineral density by 2.1% and bone mineral content by 4.2%

Higher intake of phosphorus-rich foods was also associated with higher calcium intake. Eating more calcium and phosphorus was linked to a 45% lower overall risk of osteoporosis among adults with normal blood levels of these two minerals.

There is also emerging evidence that vitamin K2 is beneficial for bone health and treating osteoporosis, particularly in combination with vitamin D. Vitamin K2 promotes bone formation and prevents bone breakdown

  • May improve oral health

Periodontitis is the inflammation of your gums and supporting structures of your teeth. It’s a very common condition and caused by periodontal bacteria.

Fermented dairy products like buttermilk may have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin cells that line your mouth

The intake of calcium from fermented dairy foods has been associated with a significant reduction of periodontitis. Non Dairy foods don’t seem to have this effect

This may be particularly helpful for people who have oral inflammation as a result of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or Crohn’s disease

  • May help lower your cholesterol levels

In a small 8-week study in 34 adults, consuming 45 grams, or approximately 1/5 cup, of reconstituted buttermilk (buttermilk powder mixed with water) daily reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides by 3% and 10%, respectively, compared with a placebo.

Furthermore, participants who began the study with elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol levels noticed a 3% reduction in this type of cholesterol .Sphingolipid compounds in buttermilk may be responsible for this effect by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in your gut. Sphingolipids are part of the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) in buttermilk

  • Linked to lower blood pressure levels

Some evidence suggests that buttermilk may help lower your blood pressure.

In a study in 34 people with normal blood pressure, consuming buttermilk daily reduced systolic blood pressure (the top number) by 2.6 mm Hg, mean arterial blood pressure by 1.7 mm Hg, and plasma angiotensin-I converting enzyme by 10.9%, compared with a placebo

Mean arterial blood pressure is the average pressure in a person’s arteries during one heartbeat, whereas plasma angiotensin-I converting enzyme helps control blood pressure by regulating fluid volume in your body

Downsides of buttermilk

Buttermilk may also have several downsides related to its salt content and potential to cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

  • Can be high in sodium

Milk products contain good amounts of sodium, making it important to check the nutrition label if you need to limit your sodium intake.

Consuming a lot of sodium is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, especially among individuals who are salt sensitive. High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease. For people who are sensitive to dietary salt, high-sodium diets can damage the heart, kidneys, brain, and blood vessels .

Low-sodium foods are defined as having 140 mg of sodium or less per serving. In comparison, 1 cup (240 ml) of buttermilk can pack 300–500 mg of this nutrient. Notably, lower-fat buttermilk often contains even more sodium than higher-fat versions .

  • May cause allergic reactions or digestive issues in some people

Buttermilk contains lactose, a natural sugar to which many people are intolerant.

Although buttermilk appears to be more easily digested by some people with lactose intolerance, many may still be sensitive to its lactose content.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance include upset stomach, diarrhea, and gas.

People who are allergic to milk — rather than intolerant — should not consume buttermilk at all. Milk allergy can cause vomiting, wheezing, hives, upset stomach, and even anaphylaxis in some people.

“I absolutely adore cows. They’re the most fascinating, gentle and beautiful animals. Their eyes are so amazing. I have ten that live on the land around my house. I love to talk to them. There are few things better than falling asleep in a field and being woken up by an inquisitive cow.”

Mary Quant

Are you ready to lose your heart and fall in love? Because once you interact with these affectionate gentle beings, you will fall in love at how much affection they have for you. These are emotional and curious beings who will run at the sight of you, demanding scratches and giving kisses.

Cows are emotional, social animals who make and keep best friends, love physical affection, show an appreciation and are deeply curious about other creatures and the world around them. They’re ADORABLE !! They love to be petted, stroked, and scratched. They are very loving and welcome interactions with kind people. Even cows who have been mistreated or abused in the past can heal over time, forgive and learn to trust people again. The best (and easiest) way to handle cows is to have them habituated to you, so they can calmly trust you rather than having a reserved curiosity coupled with fear of the unknown. Cows have incredible memories and can easily recognize individuals. Lots of sanctuaries have reported cows running over to greet visitors that they have not seen in over six months or longer.

If you have never given much thought to how wonderful cows are, now is a great time to start. Cows are gentle animals who are affectionate, emotional, and intelligent. Mahatma Gandhi described a cow as “a poem of compassion.” Cows are certainly deserving of our compassion as well as our understanding and respect.

There seems to be a stigma among people that cows are slow, unintelligent and clumsy animals. To the people who believe that you will be surprised and humbled after just a single interaction. Cows have many admirable (and adorable) traits.

  1. Contrary to popular belief, cows are actually very intelligent and are excellent problem solvers.
  2. Cows are highly social animals and often create friendships that will last their whole life. Human friends are just as important to cows, and they often bond with the people who raise them.
  3. Cow says more than Moo. They interact via huffs and grunts among other things while also giving indications of their mood via their bodies.
  4. Their milk and it’s by products are a great source of nutrition to the human body.
  5. 5. Cows have almost total 360-degree vision, except seeing from head on. If you approach them from the front, they might cock their head a bit to see you better.
  6. Language specialists have discovered that cows from certain locations actually have regional accents! How amoo-sing is that?
  7. Cows might lick you when they get comfortable with you. It is also said that when a cow licks your head your mental abilities increase.
  8. Cows are very expressive in nature, they do feel every emotion. They love their babies and seeing them happy makes the cows happy. Just like us humans, eh!
  9. They can cheer you up in case you feel sad just by making funny but cute faces.
  10. If you ever watch a baby cow play, you’ll notice how they love to jump and run around, they might even annoy you and their siblings for attention, and look adorable while doing it. Just like human babies do!

So head to the nearest cow shelter now and soak in all the love that our moo-ing buddies have to offer. Don’t forget to love ‘em right back.
